Biography
Sandy Cron Johnson, age 72 of Lake Vermilion – Tower died Tuesday, August 11, 2009 at the Wellstead of Rogers in Rogers, MN. Sandy was born July 29, 1937 in Virginia the daughter of Edward and Irene (Eberhart) Cron, Jr. She was a graduate of Roosevelt High School in Virginia. She went on to earn a degree in Elementary Education from Macalester College in St. Paul; and later earned a certification in special education from UMD.
In 1959 she married Richard (Dick) Johnson of Virginia. They moved to Kenosha, WI where their daughter Kimberly was born. In 1961 they moved back to Virginia where her husband began teaching at Roosevelt High School and their second child, Richard was born. Sandy truly enjoyed being with her children; she was a dedicated and devoted wife and mother who cared for her family with an abundance of love, kindness and patience.
Once her children were school age, she began teaching elementary school, where fourth grade was her favorite. After teaching a few years of elementary school, she began teaching special education. Because of her endless amount of patience, her loving way, and a soft spot in her heart for the “underdog”, she was perfect for this job. Sandy taught in the Virginia school system for 25 years.
In 1982, she and a friend bought the old, vacant Lutheran Church on Hwy 53 in Angora. After many, many hours of renovating and remodeling the building, they opened the doors to Country Roads, a unique seasonal gift and sandwich shop. She and her business partner continued to run the store for 13 years. Country Roads was Sandy’s passion, and she enjoyed every facet of the business.
In addition to loving and caring for her family, teaching, and Country Roads, Sandy helped her husband design and build six different houses over the course of their marriage. She was especially good at layout and deign, finishing work, and coordinating interiors. She was a tireless partner who never shied away from a difficult task.
She also found time to enjoy a number of hobbies including cooking, sewing, knitting, reading, down hill and cross country skiing, and snowmobiling. She was always working on a project or two. She loved to play cards and she played a very impressive game of scrabble. Sandy was a devoted member of PEO DX Chapter. Sandy was the constant that kept her family grounded. She was a dedicated friend who always found pleasure in helping others. Words cannot express the thankfulness we feel for having had her in our lives. We will be forever grateful for being shaped by her love and grace.
Sandy is survived by her husband: Dick; children: Richard (Vicki) Johnson and Kimberly (Bill) Retterath; grandchildren: Abigail, Autumn, Elijah, Rachel and Ren; sister: Patricia (Ed) Zelinski; numerous nieces and nephews; aunt and uncle: Bev and Don Stahl; cousin: Peggy Boardman (Veryl) Hendrickson; and a host of very special friends and relatives.
