Dear Lynne - You are such a talented and giving person. You have tirelessly devoted your entire life for your two 'gifts' from God. You have been a strong witness to your sons and have brought them up to believe in Christ and how to live for Christ. I admire you. I pray God will comfort you and see you through this time. Your little one is safe with Jesus!

Austin will be missed! I enjoyed having him on the Knowledge Bowl team in Elementary and Jr High, he was a good competitor and I will not forget his smiles when his team won and the ribbons he displayed on his chair. He was always positive, always had a smile, and I never heard him complain. It has been an honor to know Austin. He taught me that no matter what life has in store for you, have a positive attitude no matter what. Thank you, Austin, for that. God Bless you and get a KB game going in Heaven!

Chad Cooke / Duluth Firefighter

Family of Austin,
Reading about Austin in todays obituary was an awful surprise. I didn't know he was doing poorly. We really enjoyed him during all of our MDA events. Please accept our sincere condolences.
Capt. Chad Cooke, Duluth Fire Dept.
Following is the e-mail I sent the DFD members.

Austin Gillen, one of our closest MDA children passed away on Tuesday Feb 7th. He was 16 and was at all of our functions. His obit is in Thursdays paper and you will surely recognize him if you've been to any MDA functions. He attended all golf tourneys, (especially Virginia's tourney's) summer camps and the telethons. He had worn out his DFD t-shirts and needed a new one annually. His brother Everett was nearly killed in a car accident a few years ago and we were all worried about him at the time. Everett survived and is doing better but now his brother is gone.

Quick story,
Up in Virginia for the MDA golf tourney the DFD team had five players, so one cart had a single person on it. It happened to be me, so I went up to Austin at the 9 hole turn and said, "hey buddy, do want to ride with me on the back 9"? I was wondering if he'd be up to it. He said no, "I want to drive". His mother agreed and said to take it easy, so I helped him climb into the drivers seat of the cart. He lifted his leg with the help of his arms to get his foot on the gas peddle. Then he pushed with his arms down onto his leg and away we went. He was a little wild since he had to do basically all of the work with his arms, braking was even harder, but we survived. We bought him soda pops and candy all the way around and had a blast. His mobility worsened each year from being able to walk a little to being totally wheelchair bound.

Take a moment of silence for Austin and be glad that we made a few of his days better with our support.
Thanks DFD members.

Tim,

I'm so sorry to hear of Austin's passing. As a parent, I can't imagine what you and Lynne are going through. As a Christian, I'm happy to know that Austin's pain is gone and that he's in perfect health, running, jumping and maybe even playing ball.
I will be praying for you, Lynne and Everett, that the Lord will give you peace and strength to get through this very difficult time. Also, that He will give you the joy of knowing that you'll see each other again, and will be able to feel Austin's arms hug you in greeting.

My Deepest Sympathy,

Sheila Johnson
