Larry Wallin passed away Sunday evening, January 6, 2019, at Heritage Manor in Chisholm, MN. He fought a courageous battle against pancreatic cancer but died peacefully.
Larry was a well-respected and beloved friend, neighbor, uncle and teacher. He was especially proud of his career as an educator, having taught briefly in Iowa and Michigan before settling into a long stint at Hibbing High School and Hibbing Junior College. Before returning to Hibbing Larry served in the U.S. Army for two years. He retired at age 53 to a home he and his father built on Dewey Lake and continued there before entering a nursing facility because of his illness. He loved his piece of paradise, content to live a simple but elegant life. He was an accomplished gardener, baked his own bread, made raspberry jam and was content to listen to classical music, savor a pipe of his favorite tobacco and sip a scotch or two every evening. He lived life to its fullest.
Mr. Wallin had a deep and lasting impact on hundreds of students. Because of his passion for his subject and his skill as a teacher and mentor, the lives of his students were changed for the better. The world is a better place because of him.
Larry was born in Hibbing, MN, February 23, 1932; the son of Axel and Mollie (Nosan) Wallin.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister Orlaine Boshea.
He is survived by three nephews: Jon, Joseph and Jeffrey Boshea who live in the metro area. He is also survived by aunts: Marge Peterson and Gladys Groshel; many cousins, and friends.
Larry was a staunch DFLer and union supporter, serving for a time as the president of the local teacher’s union. He loved discussing politics, history and “the current depressing state of the world”. He had a great mind and was fully engaged intellectually until the end. He will be missed.
