Obituary

Alice E. Appel, 93, of Virginia, died Thursday, May 26, 2016 at Edgewood Vista. She was born August 9, 1922 in Moline, Illinois to Dr. Willis T. and Hazel S. Hinman and graduated from Moline Senior High School in 1940. She studied dance from age 3 to 18. Alice met Don Appel in 1938, and they were married November 3, 1940 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. She pursued studies at Moline Business College, Moline Community College and Augustana College at Rock Island, IL. Her early work included experience as a nurse's aide, medical technician, and medical secretary; and she served as Red Cross Gray Lady in Dixon, IL in 1944/1945. Alice and Don moved from Columbus, Ohio to Virginia, MN in July 1954. Alice was employed in the business office of the Iron Range Rehabilitation Center in Virginia from October 1, 1954 to October 1, 1984. Alice has been a member of the Peace United Methodist Church in Virginia since 1954. Her recreational interests included ice skating, swimming, bicycling, cross-country skiing and canoeing. She and her husband, Don, enjoyed many years paddling and portaging in the Quetico Park, Ontario and areas of the BWCA, spending vacations and many weekends in those areas. Upon retirement, Don and Alice spent three summers touring Canada and Alaska by bicycle and participated in cross-country ski races for many years.


Alice is survived by her nephews Jere (Nancy) Chapin of Ripon, WI; Gilbert (Mary Ellen) Chapin of Oshkosh, WI; niece, Cheryl Schroeder of Cascade, CO; and many grand nephews and nieces.


She was preceded in death by her father in 1931, her mother in 1979, her brothers Jack in 1981 and Charles in 2002 and her husband, Don, in May, 2005 after sixty-four and a half years of marriage.


A Memorial Service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, June 2, 2016 at Peace United Methodist Church in Virginia. Pastor Mickey Olson will officiate. A gathering time for family and friends will begin one hour before the service.


Memorials are preferred and may be directed to the Essentia East Range Hospice Team.
