Biography Anita Adele (Hietala) Fierke, age 70, of Mt. Iron died Wednesday, March 16, 2011 (St. Urho's Day) in Heritage Manor in Chisholm. She was born January 25, 1941 in Duluth, MN, the daughter of Glenn and Elsie (Hill) Hietala. She graduated from Hibbing High School, and went on to attend Suomi College and Augsburg College. She was united in marriage to Robert DeVere Fierke June 4, 1966 at the First Lutheran Church in Hibbing.
Anita worked for over 25 years as a nursing assistant and ward clerk at the Hibbing hospital. She also worked at the Army hospitals in Ft. Riley and Ft. Benning. She was an active member of the First Lutheran Church in Hibbing. She had a lot of Sisu, and was proud of her Finnish heritage.
Anita is survived by her husband: Robert; three daughters: Kimberly (Christopher Johnson) Fierke of Oneonta, NY, Tara (William Kleppe) Fierke of Orr, MN, and Kerry (Gardner Lepp) Fierke of Alborn, MN; two brothers: Errol (Jan) Hietala of Hibbing, and Daven Hietala of Arizona; eight grandchildren: Jordan, Laine, Riley, Chase, Davis, Paris Quinn, and Sawyer; and special friends: Sally Jonas and her Bible Study group.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
Visitation will be from 11:00 am until the 12:00 noon memorial service Saturday, March 19, 2011 in the First Lutheran Church in Hibbing. Pastor John Dietz will officiate. Memorials are preferred to The First Lutheran Church or to the Central Mesabi Medical Foundation.
