Arlette L. Kirkman passed away on Saturday, August 13th, 2011 at the age of 101 at the Virginia Convalescent Care Center. She was born on July 11, 1910, on the family farm near Madison, Minnesota, the youngest child of Nels and Anna (Jesme) Nelson. When her Dad gave up farming, Mom and her parents moved to Virginia in the summer of 1925 and her Dad went to work for the Rainy Lake Lumber Mill. Arlette attended Virginia schools and in June 1928, she met the love of her life, Roy. They married on June 21, 1930 and began a happy marriage of 71 years. Roy passed away on September 15, 2001. She was a member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church, Virginia, and until recent years, was very active in many church activities. She had a strong faith all of her life and was very proud of her Norwegian heritage.
Arlette is survived by four children: two sons, Ellwood (Betty), of Duluth, Erling (Myrna) of Ely, two daughters, Diane Kirkman of Virginia and Darlene (Ted) Greiner of Virginia. She is also survived by 10 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren, and nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Roy, her parents, four sisters, two brothers, twin granddaughters in 1963 and a great grandson, David Kure, in 2007.
Mom was a kind and gentle lady who was loved by her family and friends and will be forever missed. Rest in peace, Mommie, the pain is over. You will live in our hearts forever.
Visitation will be held Thursday, August 18, 2011 from 12:30 p.m. until the 1:30 p.m. Funeral Service in Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Virginia. Pastor Bob Simensen will officiate. Interment will follow in the Greenwood Cemetery in Virginia.
Memorials are preferred.
