Charles Donald Winger, age 69 of Embarrass, died Friday, August 28, 2026. He was born on March 10, 1957 in Remer, the son of Willfred and Carole Winger. Charles lived in Remer until he was 16, moved to the Iron Range, and has lived in Embarrass ever since. He married Lorna Schaefbauer in 1977.
Charlie liked to work: working for Mesabi Bituminous until branching into his own companies. He enjoyed exploring on his cycle and jeeping with side by sides: if it had a motor, he liked it! Charles was a man of great joy and patience, having a big smile and a hug for everyone. He was always there to help and was even a great “all time pitcher” for kickball. He and Lorna hosted a neighborhood sliding party at their place for over 20 years with many people enjoying their hospitality and fun. Charles loved to play Santa, and brought joy to hundreds of children over the last 15 years, often asking the kids if they wanted a Christmas hug or tickle. Charles was like Santa all year round, embracing life and having a spirit of giving.
Charles is survived by his wife of 49 years: Lorna; children: Cory (Jennie) Winger of Embarrass and Chad (Brooke) Winger of Embarrass; grandchildren: Tristan, Charles, Calvin, Tommy, Carter, Corinne, Alex, Tyme, and Taya; great-grandson: Cain; sisters: Maryann Martin, Jeanne (Cliff) Wagenback, Diane Larson, and Terri Mae Winger; numerous nieces and nephews, extended family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents: Bill and Carole; and siblings: Pete, Dennis, Will, and JerryBill.
A funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 4 at St. Martin’s Catholic Church in Tower. A visitation will begin one hour prior at 12:00 p.m. Father Beau Braun will officiate. Inurnment will be at the Embarrass Cemetery at a later date.
