Dale Wallace Hartshorn, 65, of Ely, passed away peacefully on Saturday, January 10, 2009 at St. Mary's Medical Center in Duluth with his family at his side.
He was born on December 9, 1943 in Fredric, WI to Wallace and Ellen (Mortson) Hartshorn. He lived in Danbury, WI until he was 9 years old when the family moved to Northwest Logging Camp near Isabella. He was confirmed in Forest Center and he graduated from Silver Bay High School in 1963.
Dale worked as a logger for many years and was then employed by Reserve Mining Company. He has worked as an equipment operator at Northshore Mining in Babbitt for the past 20 years. He loved his job and his co-workers. He looked forward to going to work.
He married Peggy Lewis on June 14, 1975 at First Lutheran Church in Ely.
Dale fought a long, difficult 14 year battle against heart disease. His family would like to thank the medical staff at the Duluth Clinic-Ely, Ely Bloomenson Community Hospital and St. Mary's Medical Center, especially Dr. Leino, Dr. Schwinghamer, Dr J. Bianco, Dr. Montana, Dr. Peterson and Dr. Lucca for keeping his big ol' heart ticking.
He loved to deer hunt, fish, spend time at the cabin and his greatest joys were in the moments he spent with his family, especially his granddaughter and his 5 grandsons.
Dale was preceded in death by his father, Wallace Hartshorn, in 1988: his father-in-law, Bill Lewis in 1998 and his sister-in-law , Linda Hartshorn in 2002
He is survived by his wife of 33 years, Peggy of Ely; three children: Heidi (Chad) Meskill, Hollee (Tom Coombe) Hartshorn and Dale (Mallory Johnson) Hartshorn all of Ely; six grandchildren: Corral, Louis and Austin Meskill, Jacob and Robert Towley and Alexander Hartshorn, all of Ely; his mother: Ellen Hartshorn of Ely and Danbury, WI.; his brothers: Maynard (Lois) Hartshorn, of Ely, Lloyd Hartshorn of Needles, CA. and Paul (Marge) Hartshorn of Finland,MN.; his mother-in-law, Beverly Lewis of Ely; sister-in-law: Pat (Mike) Vukelich of Kure Beach, NC; Brother-in-law: Tom (Doreen) Lewis of Blaine,MN.; several nieces and nephews and many dear friends, especially Marshall and Jill Hinden of Ely and his beloved pets: Princess and Meow. He is also survived by his son Lonnie Hartshorn and his family of Chisholm. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, January 14, 2009 at 2:00 P.M. at First Lutheran Church in Ely, with Pastor John Bonk officiating. Visitation will take place one hour prior to the service at the church.
