David Charles Barker, age 63 of Virginia died March 3, 2015 in the compassionate care of the Solvay Hospice House in Duluth, with his wife Rosalyn by his side. He was born August 23, 1951 in Crosby, MN the son of Adrian and Helen (Nicholls) Barker, attended elementary school in Grand Rapids and was a graduate of Aurora-Hoyt Lakes High School Class of 1969, Mesabi Junior College, and the University of Minnesota Duluth with a Bachelor's Degree in Science in 1974. Dave married Rosalyn Pietrini on June 21, 1975 in Virginia and was a longtime Virginia resident. Dave was employed as a Science and Driver's Ed. Teacher in the Wadena Public Schools; an Industrial Engineer with Hibbing Taconite; a Section Manager & Senior Coordinator of Integrated Process Control with LTV Steel; and a Claims Adjudication Supervisor, with Blue Cross Blue Shield of MN. He served in the MN Army National Guard. He was a member of the Iron Range Retriever Club, North American Versatile Hunting Dog Association, Engineers Club of Northern MN and the Corvettes North Car Club. Dave was an active community member, serving on the Mesabi Family YMCA Board of Directors, was Past President of the Engineers Club of Northern MN, and the recipient of: The Virginia Community Foundation Community Volunteer Award, the YMCA of the USA MN Alliance Distinguished Volunteer Award, and named a "Simply the Best" Blue Cross & Blue Shield of MN employee. Dave was an avid hunter, an excellent marksman, and a skilled dog trainer, who also enjoyed fishing, gardening, corvettes, classic cars, many trips to Hawaii and Uncle Bill and Aunt Ann's fish camp in Alaska, yearly hunting trips to South Dakota, corvette trips, and spending time with family and friends. He will be remembered as a devoted and loving husband and son; and a great friend.
Dave is survived by his wife: Rosalyn; parents: Adrian and Helen (Nicholls) Barker; siblings: Mary (Stan) Dalidowicz of Calgary, Alberta, Canada, Thomas (Jackie Rooney) Barker of Woodbury, MN, James (Cathy) Barker of Grand Rapids, MN, his extended family of in-laws: Ted (Marge) Pietrini, Sharon (Leonard) Haugen, Jerry (Cheryl) Pietrini, Kevin (Beth) Pietrini, Peggy (Jeff) Marwick, Shelly (Bill) Boyce, Tim (Jeanne) Pietrini, best friends Kurt and Carol Sundquist, numerous nieces, nephews and friends, and his canine training and hunting partners, Meg and Annie.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents, father-in-law Theodore Pietrini, mother-in-law Marion Pietrini, sister-in-law Kathleen Pietrini Carey and brothers-in-law Dennis Pietrini, Michael Pietrini, and James Patrick Carey.
A Gathering time for family and friends will be held Saturday, April 18, 2015 from 10 a.m. until the 11 a.m. Memorial Service in the Holy Spirit Catholic Church. Deacon Dan Schultz will officiate. Inurnment will take place in the Calvary Cemetery at a later date. Military honors will be accorded by the Virginia Servicemen's Honor Guard.
Memorials are the preferred way to honor Dave's memory, and may be directed to: Solvay Hospice House, American Cancer Society or the Iron Range Retriever Club.
