David H. Berard, age 78 of Lake Vermilion – Tower and formerly of Des Moines and Iowa City, IA died Monday, October 17, 2011 at his home, surrounded by his loving family. He was born December 16, 1932 in Des Moines, IA the son of Ralph O. and Ruth E. (Houghton) Berard. David served in the United States Army in the late 1950's. In Des Moines, he was self-employed as a Manufacturer's Representative and later worked for Economy Forms Corp. as a purchasing agent. He and his family moved to Iowa City, IA where he was the owner/operator of the Pronto Convenience Store in Coralville. David was involved in both the Boy Scouts and the Camp Fire Girls when his children were young; and was very active in the Soap Box Derby. He served as the Scoutmaster for Scout Troop #77 in Des Moines, and was a member of the Acanthus Masonic Lodge # 632 A.F. & A.M. in Des Moines. He enjoyed snowmobiling, boating, fishing, and being outdoors. David's two great loves were his family and time spent on Lake Vermilion.
David is survived by his wife of 57 years: Mary (nee Paullin); children: Ralph Berard of Vinton, IA, Linda (Joe) Vance of Clinton, IA and Carolyn (Jaret) Goforth of West Des Moines, IA; sister: Elaine Sparks of Granbury, TX; sister-in-law: Jeannie (Scott) Thompson of Ankeny, IA; grandchildren: Kami Greenwood, Bryan Krough, Rebecca and Rachel Berard, Mike and Nick Vance, Andrew, Abigail, Zachary, and Nicholas Goforth; great-grandson Noah Wilson; nephews: Scott Thompson and Mark (Courtney) Thompson and a niece: Ann Sparks.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother: Ralph Stanley Berard and two of his dearest friends: Larry Cassaday and Jack Rogers
A Memorial Service will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday, October 20, 2011 at Bauman's Vermilion Funeral Home in Tower. Pastor Bill Evans will officiate.
