David Michael VanVickle, age 36 of Ely, died Tuesday, March 17, 2009 in the Virginia Regional Medical Center after a long hard battle with illness. He was born April 17, 1972 in Ely, MN, to Beverly Leone Kappes (James Kappes). He attended school in Babbitt. He was married on March 20, 1993 to Penny Durbin in Ely. David was currently residing in Leonidas. He worked at Artic Cat in Thief River Falls for 8 years until becoming disabled and returned to Ely. He enjoyed knife collecting and bike racing.
He is survived by his wife, Penny; his children, Ian Michael VanVickle, Brianna Lynn VanVickle, and Cody Joseph Scholz; brother, Douglas Dwain VanVickle; sisters, Dena Marie (Kappes) Nyman all of the northern range, and Angie VanVickle of the Twin Cities; close friend, Joshua Rouho of Ely; father, Dwight Douglas VanVickle of MN; grandfather, Al Grembowski of Ely; grandmother, Marlis Kappes of Ada, MN; loving in-laws (outlaws); and numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
He is preceded in death by his maternal grandmother, Geraldine Grembowski; sister-in-heart, Kelly Kowarsch; cousin, Jason Grembowski; and brother-in-law, Gerald Durbin.
A time of gathering for family and friends will be Monday, March 23, 2009, one hour prior to the 1:00 p.m. Memorial Service at First Lutheran Church in Ely. Pastor John Bonk will officiate.
