Dennis Alan Schiebe, 60, Virginia, passed in his home, surround by those he loved, on Friday, November 28, 2014 after a 2 year battle with colon cancer. Dennis was born on January 28, 1954 in LaMoure ND, to Gerald and Leona (Quast) Schiebe. He lived in Jamestown, ND as a young boy and moved to Grafton, ND when his mother remarried. He was a 1972 graduate of Grafton High School.
In January, 1973 he joined the USAF and was stationed in Minot, ND and worked as an electrical / mechanical technician on Minute Man missiles and achieved the rank of Sergeant. It was during this time he met his lifelong friend, his "brother from another mother", Randy Robbins. No matter how much time passed between their visits, they always managed to pick up right where they left off.
After being honorably discharged, he married Bonnie Rasmussen from Drayton and then left for Pittsburgh, PA to attend the Art Institute of Pittsburgh, majoring in Commercial Design and graduating with a Bachelor of Arts degree.
He returned to Grand Forks, ND and worked for Barco Bearing, NAPA and Hawkes Mfg.
In 1998, he met Lori Jo Gustafson during a 7 day free trial for both of them on Match.com. After a long distance courtship, he moved to Virginia in 2000. He worked for Sykes, L & M and most currently, Christensen Parts Svc. / NAPA doing what he loved, working with car parts.
Dennis loved working on vehicles and always had one or two (or10!) in the lineup. His favorite was his 1971 Chevelle. But true to his nature, whenever another vehicle, his or someone else's, needed an engine, out it went from the Chevelle and into the daily driver. He also had his 1972 Harley Davidson, but (thankfully!) he was always too busy working on something else to get it running properly.
You could always find Dennis doodling, on napkins, scrap paper or on note books, he was rarely without a pen in his pocket or hooked on the neck of his T-shirt. He was honored to be a part of the stained glass committee at GELC.
Dennis was truly a kid at heart. He loved LEGOs and passed this love down to Kaiden and Damon, "helping" them to build their creations. He also enjoyed playing on his XBOX. When Lori Jo "complained" about being a "HALO widow", he invited her to play with him. Many fun hours were spent with the two of them slaying the Covenant and the Flood as the Master Chief throughout the franchise's games.
But mostly, Dennis will be remembered as a loving, kind, caring, easy going, never get mad at anything, give you the shirt off his back kind of guy. He would tell you he lived by
"the Golden Rule". His mottos were, "If you do something good for someone else, you will get goodness back threefold sometime down the road." And "What you do is like throwing a pebble in the water. You can never know how far out the rings will go; who may be impacted by your actions or touched by your kindness.".
Dennis touched and impacted a lot of lives in his 60 years. His passing leaves a huge void in the lives of his family and friends, and he will be forever loved and missed.
Dennis maintained an upbeat attitude and remained strong in his Christian faith throughout his journey with cancer. Dennis knew he was much loved, and those close to him knew they were loved back.
Dennis is survived by his loving wife of 13.5 years, Lori Jo (Gustafson) Schiebe; son, Derek Schiebe, Virginia and his children, Jordin and Dylan; daughter, Nichole (Daniel) Begbie, Edmond, OK; daughter, Kristen (Ray) Nori, Virginia, and her children, twins Kaiden and Damon Bloom; mother, Leona (Bob) Paulson, Grafton, ND; brothers Curt Schiebe, Grand Forks, ND and Steve (Susie) Schiebe, Grafton, ND; sister, Sandy Wilson, Culver City, CA; mother-in-law, Leslie Gustafson, Virginia; former wife, Bonnie (Randy) Graves, Grand Forks, ND; numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews; and special friends, Randy (Melody) Robbins, Fargo, ND, Dave (MaryAnn) Hansen, Virginia and Kurt Wonderlich and family, Wolff, MN.
He was preceded in death by his father, Gerald Schiebe in 1958 and step-father Hank Wicks and his father-in-law Don Gustafson in 2013.
A Celebration of Life service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, December 7th at Gethsemane Evangelical Lutheran Church in Virginia. Pastor Nathan Sager will officiate. Visitation will be for one hour prior to the service.
