Donald "Don" Wallace Hildreth, age 82 of Mt. Iron died Saturday, January 11, 2014 at Essentia Virginia Medical Center, with his family by his side. Don was born November 4, 1931 in Walker, MN., the son of Wallace and Marguerite (Anderson) Hildreth of Meadowlands. He graduated from Floodwood High School in 1949. Don served in the United States Army with the Occupation Forces in WWII, the 51st Signal Battalion as a combat photographer during the Korean War, and then the Army National Guard in Virginia for more than twenty years. After his honorable discharge, Don attended the New York Institute of Photography. Don returned to Floodwood and married Darlene Powell on November 7, 1959, soon after their marriage they moved to Mt. Iron. Don was employed as a photographer for the Mesabi Daily News, US Steel, and later was an archival photographer for Ironworld. He was a member of the Press-Floyd American Legion Post # 247 in Chisholm and the Virginia Rifle and Pistol Club. Don enjoyed hunting, fishing, shooting, reading, and spending time at the cabin.
Don is survived by his wife of 54 years: Darlene; children: Scott (Diane) Hildreth of Embarrass and Erin (Bill) Anderson of Meadowlands; grandchildren: Matthew Hildreth, Michael Hildreth, Ashley Barone and Shawn Anderson; brother: Patrick (Lei) Hildreth of Meadowlands; nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Funeral Services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Friday, January 17, 2014 in the Bauman-Cron Funeral Home Chapel in Virginia. Visitation will begin at 12 Noon. Pastor Roy Johnson will officiate the service. Interment will follow in the Greenwood Cemetery in Virginia. Military honors will be accorded by the Virginia Servicemen's Honor Guard.
