Obituary

Douglas E. Hilmas, age 85 of Britt died Friday, November 19, 2010 in his home, after a lengthy illness. He was born October 13, 1925 in Mt. Iron, the son of John and Evelina (Luodo) Hilmas. Doug served in the Unites States Navy during WWII in the Asiatic-Pacific Theatre. He married Evelyn Terrio on August 20, 1949 in the Messiah Lutheran Church in Mt. Iron and they made their home in Virginia, and later in Lake Havasu, AZ and on Sand Lake in retirement. Doug was employed as a Millwright Foreman for US Steel – Minntac retiring after 35+ years of service. He was a longtime member of the Pike Apostolic Lutheran Church and was a past board member; and was a member of the Pratt-Volden-Mickelson-Anderson American Legion Post # 239 in Virginia. Doug was foremost, a family man who cherished the time he spent with his wife, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. He was an honest, caring man who had a passion for carpentry and the outdoors. Doug enjoyed traveling, hunting, fishing, camping, snowmobiling, and canoeing.
Doug is survived by his wife of 61 years: Evelyn; children: Robert (Barbara) Hilmas of Virginia, JoAnn (Launny Bolinger) Hilmas of Montrose, CO, Marjory (Richard) Hanna of Montrose, CO, and Mary Lynn Busciglio of Rochester, MN; grandchildren: Elizabeth, Rachel (William), Emily, Naomi, David (Tetyana), Robert (Elizabeth), Bryan (Monica), and Megan; great-grandchildren: William, Lucena, Sophia, and Ayden; sister-in-law: JoAnn (Charles) Pernu of Torrance, CA; and nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; siblings: Ida Edwards, Arnold Hilmas, Ellen Pernu, Eugene Hilmas, Edna Lindholm, and Muriel Forstrom; and grandson: Travis.
Visitation will be held Wednesday, November 24, 2010 from 9:30 a.m. until the 10:30 a.m. Funeral Service in the Pike Apostolic Lutheran Church. Carl Lamppa will officiate. Military Honors accorded by the Virginia Servicemen's Honor Guard. Interment will be in the Greenwood Cemetery in Virginia at 1:00 p.m., Wednesday.
