Douglas "Doug" James Pernu, age 64, a lifelong resident of Virginia, MN died Thursday, April 30, 2015 at St. Luke's Hospital in Duluth. Doug was born February 6, 1951 in Minneapolis, MN the son of Clifford and Dorothy (Johnson) Pernu. He graduated from Virginia Roosevelt High School and earned collegiate scholarships in both violin performance and hockey. Doug married Penny Herseth on October 2, 1971 at the Lake Kabetogama Methodist Chapel. He was employed by US Steel Minntac for 30+ years, retiring in 2001as a Quality Control Coordinator. He enjoyed playing softball for many years with the Black Bear Café Team, was an avid sports fan and loved to attend his grandkids' sporting events. Doug loved the great outdoors; hunting, and fishing on Lake Kabetogama and Lake Vermilion.
Doug is survived by his wife: Penny; daughters: Lori (Jeff) Pernu Rogers of Cloquet, Cindy (Andy) Pernu-Anderson of Virginia and Amy Wesala of Virginia; sisters: Charlene (Robert) LeFaive of Visalia, CA, Kathleen Pernu of Virginia, Diane (Bob) Huot of Duluth, and Sally Pernu of Duluth; grandchildren: Cassidy Rogers, Paige Wesala, and Brent Wesala; mother-in-law: Helen Herseth of Lake Kabetogama; sister-in-law: Peggy (Larry) Nelson of Grand Rapids; brother-in-law: Lee (Lori) Herseth of Lake Kabetogama; numerous nieces and nephews, extended family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents: Clifford and Dorothy Pernu; father-in-law: Thor Herseth; and nephew: Chad Nelson.
A Memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, May 7, 2015 in the Bauman-Cron Funeral Home Chapel. Pastor Tab Baumgartner will officiate. A gathering time for family and friends will begin one hour prior to the service. Inurnment will be in the Lake Kabetogama Cemetery.
