Dr. Melanie J. Johnson, M.D., age 63, passed away peacefully on July 24, 2026, at her Lake Vermilion cabin, just days after celebrating her birthday. Born on July 16, 1963, Melanie was born to Pastor Melvin and Norma Johnson, both of whom preceded her in death. They instilled in her the values of faith, integrity, kindness, and service that guided her throughout her remarkable life.

From an early age, Melanie demonstrated exceptional intellect, discipline, and talent. She graduated as the Valedictorian of Virginia High School in Virginia, Minnesota. Gifted both academically and musically, she was an accomplished organist. She also played the saxophone in the Virginia High School Band.

After graduating cum laude from Gustavus Adolphus College, Melanie pursued graduate studies in Cellular Biology at the University of Vermont before earning her Doctor of Medicine degree from Loyola University Stritch School of Medicine. She completed her residency in Internal Medicine at the University of Minnesota.

On October 5, 1996, Melanie married the love of her life, Dale Larson. Together they shared nearly thirty wonderful years of marriage built on love, friendship, unwavering support, and countless treasured memories. Although they had no children, their home was filled with warmth and happiness through the companionship of their beloved Cocker Spaniels, who brought Melanie endless joy.

Outside of medicine, Melanie was an avid reader with an endless curiosity and love of learning. Whether she was immersed in a good book, sitting at the organ, or spending time with her beloved dogs, she found joy in life’s simple blessings. Her gentle spirit, thoughtful nature, quiet strength, and generous heart left a lasting impression on everyone fortunate enough to know her.

Melanie was preceded in death by her beloved parents, Pastor Melvin and Norma Johnson, and by her cherished sister, Kristin Hebrank, who passed away on July 5, 2026.

She is lovingly remembered by her devoted husband of nearly thirty years, Dale Larson; her beloved niece, Anna Hebrank-Beaty, her husband, Tyler Beaty, and their three-year-old daughter, Ellie, who brought Melanie great joy; along with extended family and dear friends.

A Graveside Service will be held Tuesday, July 28, 2026, at 2:30 p.m. at the Vermilion Lake Township Cemetery. Pastor Sanna Reinholtzen will officiate.
