E. Lee Marconett, age 91 of West Virginia, MN, passed away Friday, July 4, 2014 in St. Michael's Health and Rehabilitation Center in Virginia. He was born July 23, 1922 in Hopper, MN the son of John Elmer and Mildred (Kimball) Marconett and was a graduate of Mountain Iron High School. Lee was a Navy Veteran of WWII serving as an aviation mechanic 2nd class in the Asiatic-Pacific Theatre on French Frigate Shoals; and was an avid WWII historian. He married Phyllis Stoltz on March 16, 1946 and was a lifelong resident of West Virginia. Lee was an active member of Virginia Lodge # 264 AF & AM, was a Past Master, and a Hiram Award Recipient; he served as a District Representative for the Grand Lodge of Minnesota; was Past Worthy Patron of the Star of the East Chapter # 210 Order of the Eastern Star; and served as an Associate Bethel Guardian of Job's Daughters Bethel # 6 also in Virginia. Lee was employed as a Stationary Engineer for the Duluth, Winnipeg & Pacific Railroad. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, who loved doing things with kids. He was instrumental in the formation of the West Virginia Teenage Club in the 1950's. In the 1970's his home was the local after school hangout for the neighborhood kids, many of whom he tutored and assisted with their school studies. Lee truly cherished time spent with family, both at his home and at the family cabin on Lake Vermilion's Breezy Point. He was the family handyman, who was known for his ability to fix almost anything, and for the vast array of tools and hardware he kept on hand. Lee built his own home from timber he harvested from the bottom of Lake Vermilion; doing all the excavating, masonry and carpentry mostly by himself. He enjoyed making pasties, baking cinnamon rolls, a daily nap on the floor by the radiator, flower gardening and watching the Lawrence Welk Show. He was known as "The Candy Man" because he always had plenty of candy, pop and chips for anyone that visited his home and cabin.
Lee is survived by his children: DeEtta Sue Marconett of Bloomington, MN and Lee Howard (Julie) Marconett of West Virginia, MN; grandchildren: Caleb (Kristy) Marconett of Waverly, MN and Tricia (Matthew) Scott of Rolesville, NC; great-grandsons: Ryan Marconett, Brogan Scott, and Brady Scott; Sister-in-Law Helen (Bert) Marconett and numerous nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife Phyllis in 2011; and brothers: Bert and David Marconett.
A Gathering time for family and friends will be held Wednesday, July 16, 2014 from 4 p.m. until 6 p.m. in the Bauman Cron Funeral Home Chapel. Masonic Funeral Rites will be accorded at 6p.m. followed by a Memorial Service led by Reverend John Cowan. Inurnment will take place in the Greenwood Cemetery in Virginia.
Memorials are preferred.
