Ellen Elizabeth Anderson, age 97 of Tower died Tuesday, August 24, 2010 at Virginia Regional Medical Center. Ellen (Marttila) Anderson was born one of fraternal twins November 24, 1912 to Konst and Fanny Marttila. She was a graduate of Tower High School, Virginia Junior College, and earned her Bachelor's Degree in education from the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis. Ellen taught five years in the primary grades in both Winton and Ely.

Ellen married Gilbert Anderson on August 25, 1940 in Ely. They made their home in Tower and were married for 64 years. Ellen was proud to be a homemaker. The family loved her Finnish Biscuit. She enjoyed baking, knitting, crocheting, sewing, crossword and other word games. Ellen liked being at her cabin home on Lake Vermilion, entertaining family and friends.

Ellen was a devoted Christian and lifelong member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Tower. She was active in bible study, the prayer chain, the quilter's group and taught both Sunday School and weekday religious instruction.

Ellen's family wishes to thank the caring staff at St. Michael's Health and Rehabilitation Center where she was a resident for 51/2 years. The kindness showed to Ellen will long be remembered. She came to view many of the staff as family. While at St. Michael's, Ellen enjoyed bingo, and various religious programs. The family would also like to thank Bill Bauman & staff for their caring attention.

Ellen is survived by her three children: Terry (Sharon) Anderson of Ely, Darrell (Gail) Anderson of Circle Pines, and Jill (Rick) Phillips of Eveleth; grandchildren: Cheryl (Ron) Groth, David (Lori) Anderson, Kimberly Anderson, Jenny (Paul) Marchiniak, Holly Phillips, and Rachel Phillips; five great-grandchildren; as well as numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Gilbert, sisters Martha (her twin) and Betty, brother Walter, and infant daughter.

Visitation will be held Sunday, August 29, 2010 from 1:00 p.m. until the 2:00 p.m. Funeral Service in Immanuel Lutheran Church in Tower. Pastor Aaron Lofgren will officiate. Interment will be in the Lakeview Cemetery in Tower.

Memorials are preferred and may be directed to the Immanuel Lutheran Church memorial fund.
