Obituary

Eloda "Pat" Krumwiede

June 8, 1924 – October 19, 2026

Eloda "Pat" Krumwiede, 102, of Hibbing, Minnesota, passed away on October 19, 2026, at Hillcrest Terrace in Nashwauk, Minnesota, leaving behind an extraordinary legacy of faith, love, generosity, and service to others.

Born June 8, 1924, in Welcome, Minnesota, Pat lived through the Great Depression, World War II, and more than a century of remarkable change. In 1945, during World War II, she married the love of her life, Leland Krumwiede. They made their home in Fairmont, Minnesota, before settling in Hibbing in 1953. After 59 years of marriage, Leland preceded her in death in 2004.

Pat and Leland raised six daughters, but their home and their hearts always had room for more. Whether it was a family in need of shelter, a teenager who needed a safe place to stay, or someone simply going through a difficult time, their door was always open. Pat believed that blessings were meant to be shared.

Pat and Leland were tireless advocates for individuals with developmental disabilities. Through their groundbreaking work with the HOPE Association and their efforts to change legislation, they helped create opportunities for education, housing, and inclusion. Every fall she was in the woods gathering princess pine and tansy for wreaths and making candy wreaths to raise money for social activities and opportunities for the disabled in our community.

Pat's faith was the foundation of everything she did. A devoted Christian, she was actively involved in church throughout her life, singing in the choir, participating in Bible studies, and supporting Sunday School, Vacation Bible School, and youth ministries. She and Leland were longtime supporters of Gideons International and generously supported their church and other Christian organizations. Every morning at breakfast they faithfully prayed for each descendant by name. Her heart was to share the love of Jesus and introduce Him to everyone she came in contact with. At age 88, Pat fulfilled a lifelong dream by traveling to Guatemala on a mission trip, putting her faith into action and continuing her commitment to serving others

Pat believed that life was meant to be lived fully, and she did just that. She exercised every day, whether walking, jogging in her younger years, square dancing, line dancing, or simply keeping herself moving. She was part of a remarkable bowling team made up of four women in their 90s. She continued driving until age 98 and lived independently until she was 100. Following retirement, she enjoyed spending winters in Arizona, where she continued making friends and participating in activities.

She loved music and singing, a joy that began with singing alongside her family as a child and continued through years of family car trips filled with song, church choirs, and family gatherings. A competitive card player, if four people were gathered together, chances were good that a card game would soon begin!

Perhaps one of Pat's greatest gifts was her ability to make everyone feel special. She loved her six daughters and her ever-growing family with extraordinary personal devotion. She took time to know each grandchild individually, developing a unique bond with every one of them. In fact, each was quite certain that he or she was Grandma's favorite.

Through life's challenges and joys, Pat remained remarkably positive, always looking for the bright side and finding reasons to be grateful. Her enthusiasm for life, and steadfast trust in God were an inspiration to everyone who knew her.

Pat is survived by her six daughters: Pam (Wally) Heubner of Hibbing; Wendy (David) Stricker of Red Wing; Alison (Mark) Hawkinson of Shorewood; Shelly (Charlie) Sullivan of Republic, Michigan; Tammy (Steve) Valine of Houlton, Wisconsin; and Kimberly of Hibbing. She is also survived by her brother, Leal; 26 grandchildren; 76 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild plus two more children on the way, and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Leland, her grandson, Donald, her parents, 4 brothers and a sister.

For years, Pat's family has gathered to sing Find Us Faithful, a song whose message beautifully reflects the legacy she hoped to leave. More than anything, Pat wanted her life to point others toward Christ and inspire the generations following her to live with faith, love, and purpose.

Her life was a testimony to that faith. Her family is her legacy. And the love she shared will continue for generations to come.

The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the loving staff at Hillcrest Terrace, who became an extended family to Pat, surrounding her with kindness, compassion, and friendship during her final days.
