Obituary

Ernest "Ernie" Robert Nelson was born, March 5, 1923 and passed peacefully to be with his Lord on Thursday, November 3, 2011. Ernie was born to Ernest Robert Nelson, Sr. and Frances (Pond) Nelson. He was the eldest and longest living member of his family of origin. Siblings were: Donald Nelson, Judith Keith and Janet Martin.
Growing up in North Hibbing, Ernie was an excellent student, being promoted two grades ahead of his years. Following his 1940 high school graduation in Hibbing, he attended junior colleges in Hibbing and Colgate University in New York.
Ernie was very proud to be a Sergeant in the Marine Corps during WWII, then membership in the National Guard. His employment included twenty-two years of lab work in the Oliver Mining Company (U.S. Steel); he managed the Airbase Credit Union of Duluth, and was an Appraiser for St. Louis County and later an Assessor in the Hibbing Assessor's Offices.
Ernie married the love of his life, Geraldine "Jeri" Sedlack on December 12, 1947. They had two sons: Roger (Barbara) of Chisholm, MN and David (Kathleen) of Superior, WI; four grandsons: Jason (Teresa), Derek (Tanya), Travis, and Cale (Angie) Nelson; two granddaughters: Tami (Tony) Csmarich and Lesley (Kris) Jensen; eleven great-grandchildren; and one special dog: Pogo.
Ernie enjoyed a variety of interests. He loved music, and singing in the Presbyterian Church Choir, and was a member of the Duluth and Hibbing Square Dancing Clubs. Ernie built a home for his wife and sons with skills learned from reading a book on house construction. Ernie would often tell his sons, "If you want to know how to do something, read the book". He continued his interest in building by being an active part of "Habitat for Humanity". Ernie took numerous vacations and camping trips with his wife and friends. Lastly, Ernie was a great cook, making wonderful pies to treat his family. He will be greatly missed by all who loved him.
