Fred Edwin Berganini, age 94 of Hibbing and formerly of Virginia and Mt. Iron, died Thursday, June 30, 2011 in his home. He was born April 6, 1917 in Franklin Location, the son of Julius and Margaret (Boschele) Berganini. Fred worked in CCC Camp # 715 in Britt from 1933 to 1937; and served the US Army in the 3rd Armor Division during WWII. He was employed as the Service Manager for General Diesel in Hibbing, retiring in 1979. Fred was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Hibbing, and was a member of the Hibbing Men's Bowling League. In retirement, Fred enjoyed wood crafting, traveling, and RVing. Fred was a determined man of principles who was friendly, kind, and was known for his great sense of humor. His strong hands were able to fix anything; and his family was very important to him.
Fred is survived by his children: Florette (Alvin) Hujanen of Roseville and Sheldon (Rose) Berganini of Hibbing; grandchildren: Jennifer (Mike) Good, Ahti (Hillary) Hujanen, Rosalind (Jim) Plummer, Fred Berganini, Jeannie (Travis) Martin-Sago, and Jon Berganini, Jr.; 10 great-grandchildren; step-children: Irwin (Sharon Gunderson) Butler, Deborah (Jerry) Jarvis, and Tammy (Sherman) Glavon; 5 step-grandchildren; 3 step-great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews, and a host of friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife: Florence {nee Merritt}; second wife: Zonia {nee Johnson}; son: Jon; brothers: Joe, Mario, Frank V., Frank, and John; and sisters: Ann, Mary, and Margaret.
Visitation will be held Saturday, July 9, 2011 from 10 a.m. until the 11 a.m. Funeral Service in First Presbyterian Church in Hibbing. Pastors Jim Deters and Bill Evans will officiate. Interment will be in the Calvary Cemetery in Virginia. Casketbearers will be: Ahti Hujanen, Fred Berganini, Jon Berganini, Jr., Michael Good, Thomas Good, and Eric Good.
Memorials are preferred and may be directed to North Star Hospice.
