Fred Anthony Fawkes, age 86, longtime resident of Hibbing died peacefully Sunday, March 17, 2024, at the Fairview Range Medical Center in Hibbing surrounded by his family. He was born May 15, 1937, in Brookings, SD, the son of David and Irene (Jensen) Fawkes. Fred graduated from High School in Portland, OR, and went on to Receive his BS in Mining Engineering from the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology in Rapid City, SD. Fred was united in marriage to Phyllis C. Gibson on April 2, 1960, in Spearfish, SD. A Veteran of the US Army, Fred was stationed at Ft. Lewis, WA.
Fred worked as a Mining Engineer for the Minnesota Dept. of Natural Resources for over 35 years. He was an active member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church where he worked on the White Elephant Sale, property committee, church council, the Lutefisk Dinner, and served as a Lector and Teller. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, woodworking, gardening, bowling, and playing softball. He was a handyman who would fix nearly everything.
Fred is survived by his wife of nearly 64 years: Phyllis; children: David Fawkes of Hibbing, MN, Patricia (Mike) Brennard of International Falls, MN, Robert (Terri) Fawkes of Stillwater, MN, and Scott (Carrie) Fawkes of Hibbing, MN; grandchildren: Brett & Madelyn Fawkes; and numerous friends.
Fred was preceded in death by his parents; and his grandmother: Nellie who was instrumental in Fred's upbringing and his foundation in the faith.
Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. until the 11:00 a.m. Memorial Service Saturday, March 23, 2024, at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Hibbing. The Reverend Kevin Olson will officiate. Inurnment will be in the OSLC Columbarium. Memorials are preferred to Our Savior's Lutheran Church. Fred was an avid MN Twins fan – his family will be wearing Twins apparel to the service and other attendees are encouraged to do the same.
