Galen B. Squires, age 75, longtime resident of Britt, and formerly of Virginia, died Friday, February 28, 2014, at St. Michael's Health and Rehabilitation in Virginia. He was born June 17, 1938, in Fort Wayne, Indiana, the son of Charles B. and Grace L. (Crosser) Squires. He graduated from Virginia High School and attended Virginia Jr. College. Galen was united in marriage to Carla Hanson on March 11, 1961 at the Crane Lake Chapel.
Galen worked for the Red Owl stores for 20 years, then for US Steel for 5 years, and finally retired from the Potlatch Corporation in Cook after 20 years of service. He attended Emmanuel Baptist Church, and enjoyed sports (watching the grandkids), hunting, camping, bird watching, and collecting antiques.
Galen is survived by his wife: Carla; four children: Susan L. Rannikar of Virginia, MN, Daniel M. (Lisa) Squires of Gheen, MN, Tari D. (Jack) Kinnunen of Grand Rapids, MN, and Thomas B. (Nicole) Squires of Angora, MN; two brothers: Daniel J. Squires of Virginia, MN, and Dean L. (Linda) Squires of Angora, MN; and 13 grandchildren: Kaela, Emily and Matthew Rannikar, Noah, Isaiah and Elijah Squires, Luke and Hannah Kinnunen, Blake Stanaway, Daniel, Kelsey, Fraol, and Tyana Squires.
Galen was preceded in death by his sister: Mary Ann in infancy; his parents; and his father and mother-in-law: Carl M. and Margaret L. Hanson.
Visitation will be from 10:00 am until the 11:00 am Funeral Service Thursday, March 6, 2014, at the Emmanuel Baptist Church in Midway. The Rev. John Cowan will officiate. Interment will be in the Greenwood Cemetery.
