George Norman Munig, age 77 of Virginia slipped from this life to the next on Thursday, March 31, 2011 in the Diamond Willow Residence in Mt. Iron. He was born October 9, 1933 in Devils Lake, ND, the son of George W. and Elsie (Gehrman) Munig. George graduated from Devils Lake High School in 1951 where he was active in basketball and football, and then enlisted in the US Navy. He served aboard the aircraft carrier USS Kearsarge during the Korean War and was discharged from active duty in 1956. George received a BS Degree from North Dakota State University in Economics, a BA from Moorhead State University in Education, and a Master of Science in Economics from NDSU. He married Marlene Olson on June 3, 1960 in Hawley, MN, and they celebrated their 50th Anniversary this past summer.
George taught Senior Social Studies at Virginia High School for 31 years, which included courses in economics, civics, and psychology and also served as the Senior Class Advisor for 30 years. He taught Driver's Education for the High School, and developed a Driver Improvement Clinic for repeat offenders for the Court System.
George was a life member of the Virginia Elks Lodge, a member of the Crellin-Tini VFW Post # 1113 in Virginia, the Pratt-Volden-Mickelson-Anderson American Legion Post # 239 in Virginia. He was a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Virginia, where he served as a Licensed Lay Reader, Senior Warden, Sunday School Teacher, was co-chair of the St. Paul's building restoration project, and Vestry Member.
George enjoyed the family vacations with the camper and time at the cabin with his children and grandchildren. He also enjoyed their Arizona home and participating in water volleyball. He cherished watching his grandchildren grow up. George will be remembered for his many sayings, including, " there's the right way, the wrong way, and the Munig Way" and, "there are two kinds of people, northsiders and those who wish they were."
George entered the Diamond Willow Family in August of 2010. The Munigs are thankful for the excellent care that George received from the competent, caring Diamond Willow staff.
George is survived by wife of 50 years, Marlene; daughters: Lane (Russell) O'Connell of Hermantown and Catherine (John) Huss of Roseau; grandchildren: Kristin O'Connell of Fargo, Aaron O'Connell of Fargo, Bailey O'Connell of Hermantown, Matthew Huss of Roseau and Abigail Huss of Roseau; sister: Joyce Jollo of Powell Butte, OR; brothers and sisters-in-law: Edna Mae (George) Pearson of Detroit Lakes and Robert (Helen) Olson of Hawley; nieces, nephews, cousin, and a host of friends, including lifelong friend: Neale Bergstrom of San Clemente, CA.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and brother-in-law: Vince Jollo.
Visitation will be held Saturday, April 2, 2011 from 5 pm until 7 pm in the Bauman Cron Funeral Home Chapel in Virginia. Visitation will continue Sunday, April 3rd from 2 pm until the 3 pm Funeral Service in St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Virginia. The Reverend Roger Weaver and the Reverend Margaret Thomas will officiate. Interment will be in the Calvary Cemetery. Military Honors accorded by the Virginia Servicemen's Honor Guard.
Memorials are preferred and may be directed to the George Munig Economic Scholarship Fund of the Virginia Community Foundation.
