George John Yapel, age 71 of Virginia passed away Friday, March 11, 2011 in St. Michael's Health and Rehabilitation Center. He was born May 13, 1939 in Soudan, MN the son of Anthony F. and Barbara (Nemanich) Yapel. He graduated from Tower-Soudan High School in 1957, Ely Junior College in 1959 and the University of Minnesota – Duluth in 1963 with a B.S. in Elementary Education. George taught 6th grade in the Virginia Schools for 33 years. He married Mary Carlson on August 18, 1962. George enjoyed hunting, fishing, and spending time at the family cabin on Eagles Nest Lake #3.
George is survived by his wife: Mary; sons: Dr. Michael (Manette) Yapel of Clear Lake, MN and David (Kristin) Yapel of Duluth; grandchildren: Christine of Clear Lake and Joey of Duluth; siblings: Dr. Anthony (Agnes) Yapel of St. Paul and Barbara Yapel of San Jose, CA; sisters and brothers-in-law: Bob (Sally) Carlson, Janet (Gary) Erchul, Dan (Becky) Carlson, Elizabeth Pearson, Marcy (Tom) Trembath, and Diane (Paul) Dennis; several nieces and nephews, and many cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a stillborn infant daughter on August 18, 1963.
A Gathering Time for family and friends will be held Friday. March 18, 2011 from 11:00 a.m. until the 12 Noon Memorial Service in the Bauman-Cron Funeral Home Chapel in Virginia. Pastor Mike Wefel will officiate. Inurnment will be in the Lakeview Cemetery in Tower.
Memorials are preferred and may be directed to the Quad Cities Food Shelf or the Virginia Community Foundation's Educational Fund.
