Obituary

Helen Wilhelmina Simberg was called to Our Lord on January 1, 2013 in Virginia Regional Medical Center in Virginia. She was 88 years young. Helen was born the youngest of eight children to Salomon Ludvig Latvala and Johanna Liisa Petteri Korpela in Cloquet on June 8, 1924. She grew up and graduated high school in Cloquet and attended the Duluth Business University. She worked at the Northwest Paper Company general office as a secretary. (She used her shorthand the rest of her life) and had an active social life including golfing and dancing. She later met and married Viljo (Bud) Simberg. They moved to Virginia and built a house just north of town where she lived until Bud died in 2001. Helen worked at the Apollo Piping Company until her retirement. Helen then spent the remaining years in Washington Manor and Edgewood Vista in Virginia. Helen and Bud's union produced four children: Carol Alison Simberg (Cal Root) fo Elmhurst, Il, Alan Webster Simberg (Donna Taquinto) of Maine, Steven Douglas Simberg (Patricia Kummer) of Virginia, and James Ronald Simberg of Racine, WI.
Helen enjoyed many activities including but not limited to sewing, cooking, reading and spending time with her family. She and Bud enjoyed UMD Bulldog hockey games and fishing. She was a fun-loving lady and well-liked by her peers. She was very active in her church, Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Virginia, where she participated in many circles and the women's groups. She taught Sunday School and served on the church council. She and Bud delivered meals for the "Meals our Mission" program for many years. Her strong faith and devotion were felt just by meeting her. Helen will be remembered for her witty comments and sense of humor, as well as her love for her family and friends. She will be greatly missed by everyone who knew her.
Helen is survived by her children; grandchildren: Nicholas (Steven and Patty), Keith (Carol and Cal), Spencer (Steven and Patty), and Kevin (Carol and Cal).
