Obituary

Herbert Eugene Thellin Jr., died peacefully on Saturday August 24, 2013, surrounded by his family at his home in Hibbing MN after a courageous battle with cancer.
Herb was born on May 19, 1931 in Crosby, MN; the son of Doris (Fisher) and Herbert Thellin Sr. The family moved to Hibbing when Herb was toddler. He attended Hibbing High School and graduated in 1949. Upon graduation he enlisted in the Navy and spent four years aboard the USS Vesole during the Korean War.
After his service he returned home to Hibbing and married his high school sweetheart, Donna Galatz. They were married August 29, 1953 at Grace Lutheran Church and would have celebrated 60 years of marriage this year.
Herb loved engaging with people and enjoyed his work as a route salesman with American Bakeries, where he worked for 30 years. He was known to always have a smile and joke to share with his customers.
He was active in the Hibbing Elks Club, serving in many roles including Exalted Ruler. He truly enjoyed the fellowship it offered. Herb was life long active member of the First Presbyterian Church; where he had served as a deacon, superintendent of the Sunday School program, taught Sunday School and served on various committees over the years.
In his retirement, he volunteered and was President of the Hibbing Tourist Center, sharing his knowledge of the area and mining industry with visitors at the Hibbing Mine View. In addition, he served on the board of the St. Louis County Committee on Aging
In later years, he enjoyed traveling with his wife and went on numerous bus trips across the US, cruises and European tours. His favorite and most memorable was a trip to Croatia with his wife, sister-in-law and her husband (Bobbi Galatz Jones and Bill Jones)
His greatest joy was spending time with his wife, children and grandchildren. He enjoyed spending his summers with his family at their cabin on Buck Lake - fishing, water skiing and hosting gatherings of friends and family. He loved socializing with friends and dancing with his wife, over the years they had been members of several dance clubs. Herb was an avid carver and took great pride in his carvings of birds of prey. One of his pleasures was giving his carvings to friends and relatives.
He is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, three children: Joe Thellin (Susan), James Thellin, Jodie Thellin Skyberg (Jon); six grandchildren; Mandy Jo Borgeson (Jon), Channing Stark (Josh), Stephanie Thellin, Rolf Skyberg, Olivia Skyberg, Sophia Skyberg; nine great grandchildren; and brother Richard Thellin of Mora, MN.
Herbert was preceded in death by his parents; Doris and Herbert Thellin Sr., and sister Sharon Thellin.
