Howard Joseph Lunder, age 94 of Virginia, died Tuesday, March 24, 2009 in the Virginia Regional Medical Center. He was born July 12, 1914 in Dale, MN, the son of Julius and Hilda (Carlson) Lunder. He married Tynne Karen Alto on June 18, 1944 in Hibbing. Howard worked as a machinist for the Great Northern Railroad and as a machinist and foreman for Reserve Mining Co. He was currently a member of the Messiah Lutheran Church in Mountain Iron, a past member of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Babbitt, a member of Mesaba Lodge #255 AF & AM of Hibbing, the Scottish Rite Bodies of Hibbing and Duluth, the AAD Temple Shrine of Duluth, and the Ver Saba Shrine Club.
He is survived by his daughter, Lois (Don) Heikkila of Parkville, MN; grandchildren, Von (Rebecca) Laine of Mesa, AZ, Jeremy (Amy) Laine of New Prague, Miranda (Daniel) Casetta of Grand Forks, ND, Carie (Michael) Baumann of Tucson, AZ, and Mindy (Ryan) McFarren of Maplewood, MN; 15 great-grandchildren, Halley, Gage, James, Mya, Nolan, Brielle, Dominic, Nicholas, Cade, Olivia, Sam, Jade, Natalie, Elise, and Avery; a sister, Julia Petermann of Fountain Hills, AZ; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his wife, Tynne on October 5, 2003; sisters, Vivian Johnson, Inez Krogstad; and brothers, Roy and Arlo Lunder.
Visitation will be Saturday, March 28, 2009, from 12:00 noon until the 1:00 p.m. Memorial Service, at Messiah Lutheran Church in Mountain Iron. Pastor Kristin Foster will officiate. Masonic Funeral Rites by Mesaba Lodge #255 AF & AM of Hibbing will be conducted during the visitation time from 12:15 p.m. to 12:30 pm. Spring inurnment will be in the Greenwood Cemetery, Virginia.
Memorials are preferred to Shriners Hospitals for Children.
