James Robert Macomber, age 66 of Tower passed away Sunday, March 30, 2014 in his home after a courageous battle with ALS. Jim was born August 19, 1947 in Soudan, MN the son of J. Harold "Mac" and June (Johnson) Macomber. He was a graduate of Tower-Soudan High School, Vermilion Community College, and the Duluth Area Institute of Technology. Jim lived in Colorado for many years prior to returning to Tower in 2002. He was employed as a mechanical draftsman and designer and was an expert with Auto CAD. Upon his return to Tower, Jim shared his love of skiing by teaching skiing and snowboarding at Giant's Ridge; and was a member of the Professional Ski Instructors of America. He was the president of the Tower-Soudan Historical Society, active in the train restoration project, and enjoyed working in their visitor's information center at the depot. Jim loved skiing, fly fishing, hiking, and back-packing in the mountains of Colorado. He was always working on projects, enjoyed maple syrup-ping, wild ricing, and creating and maintaining the ice skating rink on the river.
Jim is survived by his father: J. Harold "Mac" Macomber of Tower; his longtime partner: Ann Flannagan; brothers: Bill of Tower and Tom (Jeanne) of Craig, CO; nieces and nephews: Cade Lofquist, Nathan (Teal) Macomber, Erica (Jason) Love and Alyssa Beth Macomber; grand-nieces and nephews: Cooper Daniel Macomber, Ely Belle Macomber, Ava Madelyn Love and Juliet Sophia Love; extended family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his mother: June Macomber and his sister: Judy Lofquist.
A Gathering time for family and friends will be held Friday, April 11, 2014 from 10:00 a.m. until the 11:00 a.m. Memorial Service in the St. James Presbyterian Church in Tower. Spring Inurnment will take place in the Lakeview Cemetery in Tower.
