Obituary

Jay N. Maratta, age 84, longtime resident of Virginia died Thursday, November 18, 2010. He will be deeply missed by all the lives that he touched.
He was born April 3, 1926 in Beaver Falls, PA, the son of Carl and Anna (Kress) Maratta. He graduated from Beaver High School and went on to receive a BA in Music from Carnegie Institution of Technology. He later received an MA in Music Education from Mankato State University. He was united in marriage to Eileen Engdahl on September 4, 1951 in Mankato.
Jay was an accomplished trumpet player and arranged music for many bands including Cliff Kyes and Shep Field's Rippling Rhythms. After many years on the road he started his teaching career beginning in Delaven, MN and then for nearly 20 years in the Virginia School System. He taught the junior high band, and was the director of the Virginia City Band for more than 20 years. He was a member of Delta Tau Delta, the Virginia Elks Club, and was the director of the community theatre in Virginia. He loved cooking, gardening, playing trumpet, and thoroughly enjoyed his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Jay is survived by his loving wife: Eileen; his children: Jaleen (Michael) O'Connor of Virginia, Dannel Maratta of Virginia, and Landa (Allan) Berry of Elk River, MN; 3 grandchildren: Brea (Timothy) Applen, Eric O'Connor, and Jake Berry; 2 step-grandchildren: Kristina (Travis) Carlson, and Tracey (Spencer) Oates; and 2 great-grandchildren: Owen O'Connor and Tyler Applen.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and his brother: Jim.
A gathering of family and friends in celebration of his life will be held Sunday, November 21, 2010, from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm in the Bauman-Cron Funeral Home Chapel.
