Obituary

Jeremy Alan “Big Jer” Michels, age 52, of Iron, MN, and formerly of Hoyt Lakes, MN, died Monday, November 2, 2026, in his home. He was born May 13, 1974, in Virginia, MN, the son of Anthony and Mary (Barnard) Michels. He was a graduate of Mesabi East High School. Jeremy was united in marriage to April Elizabeth Mayry on September 9, 2006, at Faith United Lutheran Church in Iron.

Jeremy worked as a Mobile Equipment Operator at US Steel, Minntac, for 9 years. He was a former firefighter with the Clinton Volunteer Fire Department. He loved being a husband to his “beautiful bride” and was an amazing father to his two sons. Jeremy was an avid MN Sports fan, even those Vikings. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, coaching his boys, and he had a love-hate relationship with the game of golf. He was also known for his witty, sarcastic sense of humor.

Jeremy is survived by his wife: April; sons: Austin Michels of Hoyt Lakes, MN, and Jack Michels of Iron, MN; parents: Anthony and Mary Michels of Hoyt Lakes; brother: Travis (Michelle) Michels of Rosemount, MN; sister: Tanya (Alex) Jackson of Duluth, MN; parents-in-law: Roger (Dianne) Sistad of Iron, MN; step-brothers-in-law: Craig (Angie) Sistad, and Randy Sistad (Christina Beito); nieces and nephews: Madelyn, Cameron, Zoie, Aiden, Milan, Chase, and Elizabeth; his “fur babies”: Ivy and Nala; and numerous extended family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his paternal and maternal grandparents.

Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. until the 11:00 a.m. Memorial Service Thursday, November 12, 2026 at the North Star Church in Hibbing. Matt Kangas will officiate.
