Obituary

Joan (pronounced JoAnne) Marie Carlson passed away at age 91 on September 25, 2017 at Guardian Angels in Hibbing where she had been a resident of their family for 6 years.

Joan was born December 30, 1925, to Johannes and Martha (Lilleengien) Olsvick in Minneapolis, MN. Johannes and Martha were born in Norway and came to the U.S. in the early 1900's. Joan had one older sister, Dorothy.

Joan graduated from South High School in Minneapolis in 1943 and then from the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis with a teaching degree. She taught elementary school at Kellogg School in Portland, OR and at the Seward School and Keewaydin School in Minneapolis.

In 1960 Joan, along with a friend made a tour of Europe, visiting 9 countries there.

On July 24, 1965 Joan was united in marriage to Carl Malcolm "Mac" Carlson in Minneapolis. After they were married, they moved to Mac's farm in Gowan, MN and then moved to Duluth in 1968.

Mac passed away in 1999 and soon after that Joan moved to Faith Haven Senior Apartments in West Duluth and then to St. Anne's Assisted Living. In November of 2010 Joan moved to Hibbing to live at Hillcrest Assisted Living and then moved to Guardian Angels in August of 2011. She was loved and cared for there as family. Joan and her family appreciated all the loving care that she received at Guardian Angels.

Joan loved to read the Duluth Daily Newspaper and she was especially quick at doing the Jumble word puzzle. As a child, "Joan preferred to read rather than eat" – her mother would say. Joan dreamed of becoming a librarian, but instead became an elementary school teacher. Music was also important to Joan: she played the piano and was blessed with a beautiful singing voice.

She was a member of Our Savior's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Duluth, and a member of the Guardian Angels Chapel in Hibbing.

Joan was preceded in death by her mother in 1967; her father in 1990; her loving and caring husband: Mac in 1999; her one sister: Dorothy Fleming in 1982; nephew: Robert Fleming; and brother-in-law: Walter Fleming.

She is survived by nieces, nephews and friends.

Joan was a kind, caring and compassionate person who will be missed here on earth. She had the gift of always finding something to compliment others on. She was an example of Christ's love to others.
