Joan Claire Schmaltz passed away on Tuesday, May 28, 2009, in Virginia, MN. A native of Duluth, MN, she was preceded in death by her parents, Michael and Clara (Nowak) Schmaltz; and her brother, Michael (Micky).

She graduated from Duluth Cathedral and spent her entire career at U.S. Steel/Minntac; first in Duluth, and then in Virginia. Prior to her move to the Range, Joan was a member of St. Joseph's church in Duluth Heights. A lover of dogs and every creature, Joan will be forever remembered by those touched by her care: the neighbors who had their driveways plowed before they awoke in the morning; newcomers to the area who were greeted with plates of baked goods; and the kids who left her home with baggies stuffed with candy after a visit.

Joan is survived by many cousins and her Virginia "family", Chris Jones, Brad Saxhaug, Samantha (Mike) Jones, Jessica Jones, Billy Jones, and Alex Saxhaug.

Visitation will be Saturday, May 30, 2009 at 10:00 am until the 11:00 am Mass of Christian Burial at Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Virginia. Father Lourdes Samy Kanagarajan will Celebrate. Interment will be in the Polish Catholic Cemetery in Duluth 11:30 am, Monday, June 1, 2009.
