John A. Grothe, age 85, longtime resident of Hibbing, died Saturday, June 22, 2019, at the Fairview Range Medical Center in Hibbing.  He was born December 29, 1933 in White Earth, ND, the son of Anton and Helen (Ball) Grothe.  He was a graduate of Minot State University with degrees in History and Science.  A veteran of the US Army, John served during the Korean War.  John was united in marriage to Holly Stebbins on May 19, 1990, at the 1st Presbyterian Church in Hibbing.

John worked as a teacher in North Dakota, for Social Security, and later as a Security Guard at Hibbing Taconite – retiring in 1996.  He was a member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church, Sons of Norway Midnatsolen Lodge #058, the American Legion, and the Lions Club.  He enjoyed attending concerts.

John is survived by his wife: Holly; and his sister: Carol (Howard) Ashley of Tacoma, Washington; extended family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and his son: Tom.

Visitation will be from 1:00 pm until the 2:00 pm Memorial Service Saturday, June 29, 2019, at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Hibbing.  The Reverend Kevin Olson will officiate.   Memorials are preferred to the Our Savior's Lutheran Church Heating Fund.
