John E. "Mad Dog" Ranua, age 72 of Mt. Iron, died Sunday, January 31, 2010 in the Virginia Regional Medical Center. He was born June 14, 1937 in Menahga, MN the son of Everett and Lizzie (Hiltunen) Ranua. John served in the U.S. Army in Germany from 1959 until 1962. John moved to the Mt. Iron area after his discharge and was employed at the Staver Foundry. John married Mary Donahue on December 22, 1986 in Virginia. He was a collector of antiques and old cars, especially Model A's & T's. He also enjoyed country music and gambling.
John is survived by his wife: Mary; children: Tina (Ray) Nietzold of Clearwater, FL, Kathy Kangas of Wilmington, NC, Jennifer (Phillip) Haworth of Duluth, and Paul Herdenberg of Duluth; grandchildren: Grant, Alysha, Tiffany, Bradley, Madison, Abigail, Trinity, and Damian; brothers: Walter (Bev) Ranua of Blaine and Ed (Pam) Ranua of Detroit Lakes; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and siblings: Elmer Ranua and Ellen Venske.
Visitation will be held Thursday, February 4, 2010 from 3:00 p.m. until the 4:00 p.m. Funeral Service in the Bauman-Cron Funeral Home Chapel in Virginia. Pastor Steven Kelleher will officiate. Private family interment will take place at a later date.
