John Francis Spollar age 76 of Virginia, died Sunday, May 26, 2013 at St. Joseph's Hospital in St. Paul surrounded by loving family. He was born, September 9, 1936 in Soudan, Minnesota, the only child of John and Sophie Spollar. John graduated from Tower-Soudan High School in 1954, served as a sergeant in the army in Korea, and worked as a miner in both the Soudan Mine and the Pioneer Mine in Ely. He finished his career at US Steel working in the accounting department at Minntac until he retired in 1998 with 43 years of service. John married MaryAnn Walli on June19, 1965, in St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Ely, Minnesota. Growing up in Soudan, John was affectionately called "Dodie" by family and friends. For many years he was also called "Uncle John," but the name he was most proud of was "Grampa."
John will be missed by his wife: Mary Ann; children: Lori (Steve) Plunkett of Duluth, John Matthew Spollar of Minneapolis, and Dr. Amy (Jason) Kraus of Woodbury, MN; grandchildren: Jacob Michael Plunkett, Madelyn Marie, Zachary John, Kathryn Olivia, Alyson Rose, and Hannah Mae Kraus; special cousin and sister-in-law Frank and Genny Spollar of Gilbert and their daughters, Carrie (Paul) Bajda and children, and Gayle Bajda and son; cousin-in-law John (Deb) Pusari of St. Paul; and close friends Bill & Gayle Lilya, Ronald & Sandy Markovich all of Virginia, and Ron & Mary Lee of Tucson; extended family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, father and mother in-law Arvo and Angeline Walli, as well as extended family members.
John was truly loved and will be forever missed. He was "the best."
Visitation will be held on Thursday, May 30, 2013 beginning with a recitation of the Rosary from 10:00 a.m. until the 11:00 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial in St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Gilbert. Reverend Father Charles Flynn will celebrate the Mass. Private interment will be held in the Greenwood Cemetery in Virginia.
