John T. Stimac, age 89, of Michigan and formerly of Nashwauk, Minnesota, passed away peacefully on December 10, 2016 at the D.J. Jacobetti Home for Veterans in Marquette, MI.

He was born December 23, 1926, in Nashwauk, the son of Steve and

Katherine (Sterbenz) Stimac. A Veteran of the US Army, John served in the European Theatre during World War II. After returning from WWII, John was united in marriage to Evelyn Glatch.

John was employed by Cleveland Cliffs over his entire work career – first in Minnesota, and then transferring to Ishpeming, Michigan in 1963 – until his retirement in 1983. John and Evie moved to Florida in 1985 where they enjoyed the sunshine. In 1995, they moved to Brighton, MI to be closer to family. John enjoyed outdoor activities, watching sports, working with his hands, and helping anyone that needed a hand.

Family, faith and friendships were always very important to John and Evie. They had numerous friends in their Brighton neighborhood, many of whom became extended family. John and Evie dearly treasured these relationships.

John was affectionately known by the neighborhood children as "Papa John." He truly enjoyed spending time with the children. He also liked the neighborhood dogs and always had treats in his garage for those that came by. John was known for his kind demeanor, humility, gentleness, patience and for being a good listener. Adults and children sought his wisdom and sage advice. He was man with many sayings and when he advised "don't worry about it," people trusted he was right. He was one of kind, had a warm smile for all, and will be missed by those who knew him.

John is survived by his children: Dr. Edward (Cynthia Robinette) Stimac of Northville, MI, Diane Stimac of Manistique, MI, and Carol (Larry) Alto of Marquette, MI; his sister: Katherine (Tom) Davis of South Carolina; grandsons: Dale and Bradley Alto; and many nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his beloved wife of over 50 years, Evelyn (in 2002); his brothers: Albert and Edward; and his sister: Mary Anderson (also known as "Neen").

A Visitation will be from 10:00 am until the 11:00 am Mass of Christian Burial Friday,

January 13, 2017, at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Hibbing. Interment will be in the Hibbing Park "Maple Hill" Cemetery. Memorials are preferred to the Alzheimer's Association.
