Leo L Phaneuf, age 91, passed away February 11, 2026, at St. Mary's Medical Center following a brief illness. Leo was born on November 28, 1934, in Hibbing, Minnesota. His family moved to Parkville when he was a young boy. Leo's childhood was marred by the death of his father, Russell, in a construction accident when he was only 13. Leo graduated from Mountain Iron High School in 1952. After he graduated from high school he went right to work for Virginia Ready Mix, eventually retiring from Seppi Brothers in 1998. He was self-taught and could build things, fix anything and solve problems with the best. Leo was a proud Teamster and member of Local 346.
Leo was married to Ruth Josephson for 61 years before her death in November of 2017. Together they raised six children. He was preceded in death by his parents: Russell and Lillian Phaneuf; Ruth's Parents: Alfred and Ailie Josephson; Sister: Vivian (Robert) Muhich; Brother: William "Bill" and Roger; In-Laws: Ross Josephson, MaryJo Phaneuf, Phillip Thoennes; Grandson: Stephen Hill
Leo is survived by children: Julie (Brian) Phaneuf-Hill, Jerri Lynn Carron (Duane Zamlen) Jodie Phaneuf (Brent Saari), Joy (Jon) Kolstad, Scott Phaneuf and Mark (Katie) Phaneuf. 17 Grandchildren and 16 Great-Grandchildren and 4 more arriving in 2026; Siblings: Barbara Thoennes, James Phaneuf; Brother-in-law: Mark (Kate) Josephson. We grew up spending much time with our extended family, and there are many nieces, nephews, friends and neighbors that will remember Leo fondly.
We will be gathering to celebrate Leo's long, productive life on Friday February 20, 2026, at the Iron Trail Motor and Events Center in Virginia, Mn. Visitation will be at 12:00 noon, with the service at 1:00 P.M.
A Private family burial will take place on our parent's 70th wedding anniversary.
