Marguerite Nicholas Grams, age 104, died Tuesday, March 31, 2015 at Essentia Health Virginia Care Center. Marguerite was born November 2, 1910 in Salisbury a suburb of Ishpeming, Michigan to Elias and Laura (Rogers) Nicholas. After moving to the Iron Range and spending two years in Aurora, the family moved to Elba and later to Elcor. She attended schools in Elcor and Gilbert and graduated from the Virginia High School and Junior College.
She worked for the City of Virginia before entering the Red Cross service in March 1943. She was executive secretary for the Virginia Brand of the Northeast Chapter until 1955 when she was named administrator of the East Range Region. The much admired Gray Ladies were established in 1950 and served for three decades in the Pioneer Infirmary and Range Rehab, the Arrowhead Nursing Home in Virginia and in Nursing Homes in Eveleth, Cook, Biwabik, Aurora, Buhl, and Ely.
In 1968, she resigned to marry Harold W. Grams. At the end of two years she returned to Red Cross to serve as General Field Representative for the North end of St. Louis County and Itasca County. She retired from the Red Cross in 1980.
Marguerite called the organizational meeting of Soroptimist International of Virginia which was chartered in 1956 and was a life member and past president. She was also a member and past president of PEO Chapter CI where she served as Chaplain; a member of the Virginia Study Club, and the Virginia Historical Society. She was a life member of the St. Louis County Safety Council and served as secretary/treasurer for 21 years. Marguerite delivered meals on wheels in the Laurentian Manor and had served the president of its resident group. She was a lifelong member of the United Methodist Church, sang in its choir, taught Sunday school, and served on the Stewardship Commission and the Worship Commission. As a member of the United Methodist Women, she was twice past president, vice president, and program chairwoman for many years. Marguerite authored and narrated the Sacrificial Breakfast, an annual Holy Week event, for many years.
Marguerite is survived by her sister-in-law: Jean Workman Nicholas, nieces: Susan (Don Drackert) Nicholas, nephews: Rev. Douglas (Gladys) Nicholas, Rev. Ron (Dorothy) Nicholas and Paul (Karen Heine) Nicholas; stepdaughters: Marion (Edward) Skalko, Elsie Wiser, and Nancy Mosier; stepson: William (Jodi) Grams; step grandchildren; numerous grand nieces and nephews; extended family and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband: Harold; her parents; brothers: Eldredge and Rev. Clarence Nicholas; stepchildren: Grace Hinsa; Carol Landmark, Harold Grams, Jr., John Grams, Robert Grams, Richard Grams, Bud Wiser and Joel Mosier.
A Gathering time for family and friends will be held Saturday, April 25, 2015 from 10 a.m. until the 11:00 a.m. Memorial Service in the Peace United Methodist Church in Virginia. Pastor Mickey Olson will officiate. A private family Inurnment will take place in the Greenwood Cemetery.
Memorials are the preferred way to honor Marguerite's memory and may be directed to Peace Untied Methodist Church.
