Marko Deretich, age 84, lifelong resident of Hibbing died Thursday, January 10, 2013, in St. Mary's Essentia Health in Duluth. He was born February 20, 1928, in Carson Lake the son of Tom and Bosilka (Samardzich) Deretich. He was a graduate of Hibbing High School. A veteran of the US Army, Marko served during the Korean War.
Marko worked for Longyear Mining, the Hill Annex Mine, and Jones & Laughlin where he was a utility man – retiring in 1980. He was a member of St. Michael's Serbian Orthodox Church, and was a lifetime member of VFW Post #8510.
Marko is survived by three sisters: Dana Kovich of Bloomington, MN, Dorothy Kosanovich of Las Vegas, NV, and Olga (Dan) Ljubenko of Chicago, IL; four brothers: George Deretich of Ham Lake, MN, Sam (Elizabeth) Deretich of Anoka, MN, Peter (Linda) Deretich of Holly, MI, and Nick Deretich of Reno, NV; and numerous nieces, nephews, and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother: Walter; and his sisters: Helen and Sophie.
Visitation will be from 10:00 am until the 11:00 am Funeral Service Wednesday, January 16, 2013 in St. Michael's Serbian Orthodox Church in Hibbing. The Reverend Vladimir Lange will officiate. Interment will be in the Maple Hill Cemetery in Hibbing. Memorials are preferred to St. Michael's Serbian Orthodox Church.
