Matthew Joseph Oberstar, age 78 of Buhl and formerly of Virginia, died Monday, May 25, 2009 in the Cornerstone Villa in Buhl, following a long battle with cancer. He was born January 31, 1931 in Virginia the son of Fred and Angeline (Muster) Oberstar and was a graduate of Virginia Roosevelt High School. Matt married Audrey Peterkin on December 12, 1953 in Virginia. He was employed as painter for the Virginia School District and was a private painting contractor. Matt served in the Minnesota National Guard for over 20 years, retiring as a Sergeant. He was a member of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Buhl. Matt enjoyed traveling, wintering in Florida, and vegetable gardening.
Matt is survived by his wife of 55 years; Audrey; sons; James (Kathy) Oberstar of Virginia, David Oberstar of Duluth, John (Peggy) Oberstar of Virginia and Peter (Kathy) Oberstar of Richfield, MN; a brother; Reverend Father Richard Oberstar of St. Matthias, MN; sisters; Marge Eggerman of Coupeville, WA, Marie Palm of Edmonds, WA, Genevieve (Mike) Michaloski of Deerwood, MN, and Bernadine (Mack) Gardner of Geneseo, IL; grandchildren; Beth (Dave) Hartman, Andy Oberstar, Mike Oberstar, Molly Oberstar, Lisa Oberstar, Laura Oberstar, Grace Oberstar, and Eric Oberstar; great-grandchildren; Emma Oberstar, Haylie Hartman, and Hannah Hartman; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother Fred, and a grandson Douglas.
Visitation will be held Wednesday, May 27, 2009 from 10 a.m. until the 11 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial in St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Chisholm. Reverend Fathers Fredrick Method and Richard Oberstar will con-celebrate the Mass. Interment will be in the Calvary Cemetery.
