Myrl Minerva Alar, age 92 of Virginia died Friday, November 4, 2011 in the Ecumen Villages at North Branch, with her family by her side. She was born June17, 1919 in Lakefield, MI the daughter of Samuel and Winifred (Myers) Bryers and was a graduate of Virginia High School and had attended Virginia Junior College. Myrl married Emil Alar on November 18, 1939 in Hibbing and lived in Virginia for almost 80 years before moving to North Branch to live with family in 2003. She was a homemaker and had managed the Westwind Orchard Apple Store for several years. Myrl was a member of the Virginia United Methodist Church and enjoyed singing in the church choir. She loved music and in her younger years had also sung with the Sweet Adelines. Myrl did many varieties of handwork for the church Bazaar. Myrl also made afghans and quilts for children in the Bethany Range Shelter and respite care, and volunteered faithfully at the Virginia Historical Society. She cherished time spent with her family, spending time at the family cabin on Lake Vermilion, and was an avid reader.
Myrl is survived by children: Emily (Patrick) Lanin off Brainerd, Gail (Steven) Fonnest of North Branch, Denise (Dave) Emery of Coon Rapids, Darwin (Lynda) Alar of Virginia and Colleen (Curt) Bocchi of Minnetonka; siblings: Duane Bryers of Tucson, AZ and Phyllis Chilcote of Virginia; 12 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; along with a host of friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband: Emil; an infant son; brothers: Faye, Theil, and Vaughn Bryers; grandson: John Lanin; and great-grandson: Casey Hoops.
Visitation will be held Wednesday, November 9, 2011 from 1:00 p.m. until the 2:00 p.m. Funeral Service in the Virginia United Methodist Church. Pastor Brenda King will officiate. (childcare will be available) Interment will follow in the Greenwood Cemetery.
