Obituary

Myron J. Carlson, age 82, of Hibbing, died Friday, September 7, 2013 at the Grand Itasca Hospital in Grand Rapids, MN. He was born July 25, 1931 in Browerville, MN, the son of Henry and Ella (Dodge) Carlson. Myron was a graduate of Swanville High School, St. Cloud Teacher's College, and earned his Master's Degree in Science at the University of North Dakota. He was an honorably discharged veteran of the United States Army, serving during the Korean War. Myron married Gwendolyn "Gwen" Clark on June 6, 1964 in Little Falls, MN. He taught for 33 years, beginning in Parker's Prairie, then moving to Delano, prior to moving to Hibbing in 1964 where he taught for 27 years. In retirement, Myron and Gwen split time between their beloved cabin on Burnt Shanty Lake and their winter home in Weslaco, Texas.
Myron was a member and Past Master of Mesaba Lodge #255 AF&AM; a member of the Scottish Rite Bodies; Past Worthy Patron of the Order of Eastern Star Chapter # 211; Past Associate Guardian of Jobs Daughters Bethel # 4 ; and served as a Counselor for DeMolay. He was also active in the Boy Scouts of America; and a member of the Hibbing American Legion Post # 222. Myron loved to travel, enjoyed fishing and hunting, and was an accomplished woodworker who enjoyed refinishing furniture and making creations out of diamond willow. He was a man with a servant heart who enjoyed helping others; and celebrated the beauty and splendor of the world around him every day. Myron was a compassionate husband, a loving father, and a great Grandpa. He cherished his time spent with family and friends.
Myron is survived by his wife of 49 years: Gwen; children: Cindy Tawyea of Zimmerman, MN, Peter (Penny) Carlson of Portage, MI, and Dean (Donna) Carlson of Hibbing; grandchildren: Samantha (Tom) Moder, Ray Tawyea, Sarah Tawyea, Shane Carlson, Peter Carlson, Devin Mousseau, Dylan Carlson and Michael Carlson; great-grandchildren: Rylee, Elissa, Mason, Emily, Nick, Julia, and Katerina; siblings: Florence Dean of Tacoma, WA and Marshall (Evelyn) Carlson of Pine City, MN; sister-in-law: Leota Carlson of Grand Rapids, MN; numerous nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; siblings: Cyrus Carlson, Lorraine Loken, Everett "Bud" Carlson, and Philo Carlson; and a grandson: Jacob Ryan Tawyea.
A Gathering time for Family and Friends will be held Wednesday, September 11, 2013 from 12:30 p.m. until the 2:00 p.m. Memorial Service in the Anderson-Daniels Funeral Home in Hibbing. Pastor Paul Olson will officiate.
Memorials are preferred to establish the Myron Carlson Memorial Scholarship Fund.
