Neil C. "Hardrock" Anderson, age 87, longtime resident of Zim died Friday, August 10, 2018, at Essentia Health – St. Mary's in Duluth. He was born June 4, 1931 in Warren, MN the son of Andrew and Anna (Bradley) Anderson. He attended school in Warren and later received his GED and an Honorary Diploma from Warren High School. A veteran of the US Army, Neil served during the Korean War receiving the Korean Service Medal with 3 Bronze Stars and the United Nations Service Medal. He was united in marriage to Emily J. Schwandt on August 22, 1958 in Virginia.


Neil worked at the US Steel Minntac plant in various capacities – retiring as a Forklift Operator. He was a member of the VFW, the McDavitt Volunteer Fire Dept., was a Township Maintenance Foreman for the Parks and Recreation Department, and was a Fire Warden for 45 years. He enjoyed military and US history, and working on his hobby farm.


Neil is survived by his wife of nearly 60 years: Emily; three daughters: Susan (John) Sanders of Rapid City, SD, Betty Anderson of Blacksburg, VA, and Gina Permar of Willmar, MN; six grandchildren: Jeremiah and Mary Sanders, Sterling (Dawn) Watts, Bronwen (Andrew Burge) Watts, Michael Garcia, and Jarred Permar; and numerous extended family and friends.


He was preceded in death by his parents, and 16 siblings.


Visitation will be from 10:00am until the 11:00am Celebration of Life Service Thursday, September 6, 2018, at the McDavitt Town Hall. Pastor Brad Felix will officiate. Inurnment will be in the Minnesota Veterans Cemetery in Little Falls. Memorials are preferred to the VFW, Animal Shelters, or the Olcott Park Foundation.
