Nick Basarich, age 90, of Minneapolis and formerly a longtime resident of Hibbing died Sunday, August 19, 2018, at the Minnesota Veterans Home in Minneapolis. He was born November 29, 1927, in Hibbing, MN the son of Peter and Frances (Rukavina) Basarich. He was a graduate of Hibbing High School. A Veteran of the US Army, Nick served in Japan during WWII. He was united in marriage to Arlene Anderson at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Hibbing, MN on February 3, 1951.
Nick began working for Oliver Iron Mining and the Evergreen Mining Co in Hibbing. He worked for Cobb Cook Grocery and Fraboni's as a butcher. Most of his working career was as a Postal Carrier and then Superintendant of Postal Operations in Hibbing – retiring in 1986. He served on the Board of the Co-op Credit Union. He was a Mason and Shriner. Nick was a member of the VFW, the American Legion, the Loyal Order of the Moose, the Lions Club, and the Rifle Club. He enjoyed bowling, hunting and golf.
Nick is survived by his children: Nick (Mary) Basarich of Stingy Lake, MN, Mike (Pat) Basarich of LaFollett, TN, Brenda (Don) Hazeman of Bemidji, MN, Debbie Mueller of Eagan, MN, Lori (Darren) Knoop of Rosemount, MN, and Steve (Robin) Basarich of Ramsey, MN; fourteen grandchildren, fifteen great-grandchildren, and many extended family members and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife: Arlene in 1991; brothers: Robert, Mike, George, Isaac, and Peter; and sisters: Mildred Vukich and Helen Sundquist.
A Memorial Service will be held on Wednesday, August 29th at 10:30 am at the Minnesota Veterans Home Chapel at 5101 Minnehaha Ave. in Minneapolis. Inurnment with Military Honors will follow at Ft. Snelling National Cemetery.
Nick's family wishes to extend their gratitude to the staff at the Minnesota Veterans Home and the Allina hospice staff for the comfort, care and compassion that was always shown to Nick.
