Norma "Audrey" Oakman, age 83 of Virginia, MN, passed away on Thursday, October 15, 2009 in the Virginia Convalescent Center, after a long illness. She was born June 16, 1926, in St. Cloud, MN the daughter of Wilfred and Helen (Asleson) Peterson. Audrey grew up and attended school in Kennedy, MN, where she was the Valedictorian of the class of 1944. She attended Bemidji State Teachers College and later became a Physical Education teacher in Glencoe, MN. On June 7, 1952, Audrey married Richard H. Oakman; and a few years after their marriage they moved to Virginia. Audrey was involved in many activities throughout her life. She was a very active member of Gethsemane Evangelical Lutheran Church in Virginia, where she served on the church council, Gethsemane Women, and other church boards, was the coordinator of the Prayer Chain, was a member of the Miriam Circle, taught Release Time, Bible Studies and other adult classes. She also was a member and leader in the Christian Women's' Group. Audrey enjoyed playing volleyball, bowling, and watching her children's' many activities over the years. Audrey cherished the time spent with her family and was a very loving and proud Grandma.
Audrey is survived by her children: Robert (Cheryl) Oakman of Franklin, TN, James (Janine) Oakman of Tower, MN, Jack (Barb) Oakman of Eveleth, MN, Eric Oakman of Britt, MN, and Lois Oakman of Superior, WI.; a sister, Lois Lindquist of East Grand Forks, MN; grandchildren: Brittany, Kayli, Megan, Jared, and Gage; sister-in-law: Fran Matich of Virginia; brother-in-law, Jack (Evelyn) Oakman of Littleton, CO; many nephews, nieces, and cousins, and the many friendly and caring staff and residents of the Virginia Convalescent Center.
She was preceded in death by husband: Richard in 1989; her son, Jody in 1974; sister, Mavis Osmundson; her parents; her stepmother: Georgia Peterson, and many brothers and sisters-in-law.
Visitation will be held Monday, October 19, 2009 from 10:00 a.m. until the 11:00 a.m. Funeral Service at Gethsemane Evangelical Lutheran Church in Virginia. Pastor Nathan Sager will officiate. Interment will follow in the Greenwood Cemetery in Virginia.
Memorials are preferred and may be directed to Gethsemane Evangelical Lutheran Church.
