Peter M. Johnson, age 76, longtime resident of Virginia, a man with a big heart, a giving spirit and was truly "One of a Kind". Peter died unexpectedly, Friday, July 10, 2015, at Essentia Health – St. Mary's Cardiac Care Center in Duluth. He was born August 26, 1938, in Detroit, MI the son of Bernard and Margaret (Engman) Johnson. Pete was a Class of 1957 graduate of Virginia High School, where he played goalie for the Blue Devil Hockey Team, and held the record for the most saves in a single game. He also graduated from Virginia Junior College and UMD where he received his Bachelor's degree in Industrial Arts Education and a minor in Mathematics. Peter was employed as an industrial arts teacher at Kellogg High School in St. Paul, where he coached wrestling and Williams High School in Williams, MN where he coached hockey. He was then employed as a Master Electrician working through IBEW 294 and also owned and operated Pete's Electric.
Pete was a member of Gethsemane Evangelical Lutheran Church in Virginia, Master of the Virginia Masonic Lodge # 264 AF&AM, a Past High Priest of the Royal Arch Masons # 35 in Eveleth, the Knights Templar Commandery, the AAD Temple Shrine and its member clubs: Ver-saba Shrine Club, the Marching Patrol and Snowmobile Patrol. He also served on the Police and Fire Commission in Virginia.
Pete enjoyed dancing, curling, fishing at the family cabin on the Ash River, hunting at the family camp on Partnership Point on Pelican Lake, snowmobiling, and cooking, especially his Swedish Pancakes, playing trumpet, polka music, and was proud of his Swedish Heritage. His love of hockey began at a young age, and continued throughout his life.
Pete is survived by his children: Michael (Jane) Johnson of Coon Rapids, MN and Michelle (Phil) Murray of Warroad, MN; three grandchildren: Joshua Murray, Amy (Joshua) Meidinger, and Tiffany Murray; three great-grandchildren: Alexis Murray, Kiley Meidinger, and Jacob Meidinger; brother: Warren (Ethel) Johnson of Faribault, MN; sister: Gretchen Johnson of Maricopa, AZ; extended family and a host of friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a son in infancy.
A Gathering time for Family and Friends will begin Thursday, July 23, 2015 at 10:00 a.m. with a Masonic Funeral Rite at 10:30 a.m. and the Memorial Service at 11:00 a.m. at Gethsemane Evangelical Lutheran Church in Virginia. Pastor Nathan Sager will officiate. Inurnment will be in the Greenwood Cemetery in Virginia.
