Philip Carter Hilliard, age 87, longtime resident of Hibbing and Kelly Lake, died Thursday, September 3, 2009 in St. Mary's Medical Center in Duluth. He was born July 19, 1922 in Doniphan, MO the son of John and Lula (Thompson) Hilliard. He graduated from high school in Doniphan and went on to serve in the U.S. Army in the South Pacific during WWI. He was a recipient of the Bronze Star. He was married to Eileen Kilmon in June of 1946, and following her death was married to Bette Ribich in April of 1993.
Worked as a maintenance mechanic for Hanna Mining Co., and later for US Steel. He enjoyed golfing, fishing, hunting, and playing tennis in his younger years.
Philip is survived by his wife: Bette; his son: Stanley E. (Barbara) Hilliard of North St. Paul, MN; four grandchildren: Sarah, Amy, Phillip, and Greg; ten great-grandchildren; a daughter-in-law: Pat; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; six siblings; his first wife: Eileen; and his son: Harry.
Visitation will be from 1:00 pm until the 2:00 pm service Tuesday, September 8, 2009 in the St. James Episcopal Church in Hibbing. The Reverend Marta Maddy will officiate. Interment will be in the Nashwauk Cemetery. Memorials are preferred to the Salvation Army, St. James Episcopal Church, or the donor's choice.
