Obituary

Randall Hjalmar Hietala, age 74 a longtime resident of "West Palo" died Saturday, September 26, 2015 in his home of natural causes. He was born August 30, 1941, in Biwabik, the son of Hjalmar and Saima (Konu) Hietala. Randall was a graduate of Biwabik High School, Virginia Junior College, and earned his Bachelor's Degree and Master's Degree in Education from UMD. He put himself through college by working as a rail car rider at Reserve Mining in Two Harbors. His first employment in education was serving as a teacher and later as Principal on Mackinac Island; following that he was employed by the Virginia School District, the Biwabik School District, and finally the Aurora-Hoyt Lakes School District. Randall was a gifted Instructor, served as a Title One Director, and his love for kids was demonstrated in his teaching style and delivery. He was a member of the Knights of Kaleva, and served as a Teacher's Union Representative for many years. He loved to tease, enjoyed entertaining, and playing cards every Thursday night at The Pub.
Randall is survived by stepchildren: Tammy Lehto of Biwabik, Terrie (Howard) Jensen of Biwabik, and Tim (Kris) Collins of Palo; grandchildren: Adam, Stephanie, Randy, Casey, Timothy, Eisa; great-grandson: Myles; numerous nieces, nephews, extended family and many friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers: Lloyd, Francis, Ronald Hietala; and aunts and uncles.
A reunion for family, friends, and relatives will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, October 8, 2015 at the Loone Lake Community Center in Palo.
