Renee Kay Tomatz, age 61, lifelong resident of Hibbing died Friday, October 07, 2011,
in the Fairview University Medical Center – Mesabi after a 4+ year battle with cancer. She was born October 21, 1949, in Hibbing the daughter of Norman and Iris Sherman. She graduated from Hibbing High School, and went on to receive her Bachelor's degree from Bemidji State University and her Master's degree in Psychology from The University of Wisconsin – Superior. She was united in marriage to John "Jack" Tomatz on June 17, 1972, in the 1st Presbyterian Church in Hibbing.
Renee worked as a Teacher, Counselor, Deputy Sherriff for St. Louis County and Social Activist. She was the Creator and Founder of the Family Investment Center in Hibbing. She was active in many groups including: the Fair Plan Insurance Group, the Soroptomists, The Food Shelf Committee, the Lions Club, the VFW Auxiliary, and the American Cancer Society. She was an active member and Deaconess at the First Presbyterian Church in Hibbing.
Renee is survived by her husband: Jack; her children: Dawn (Zak) Spaniol of Rochester, MN, Holly (Mark) Hyatt of Hibbing, and Kathi-Jo Perry of Chisholm; her mother: Iris Sherman of Hibbing; her brother: Bruce (Judy) Sherman of Hibbing; her sister: Carol (David) Voss of Hibbing; five grandchildren: Zane, Talan, Cy, and Rain Spaniol, and Cecelia Hyatt; nieces, nephews, and many friends.
She was preceded in death by her father, and her infant brother; Wade.
Visitation will be from 11:00 am until the 1:00 pm memorial service Wednesday, October 12, 2011 in the First Presbyterian Church in Hibbing. The Reverend James Deters will officiate. Inurnment will be in the Maple Hill Cemetery in Hibbing.
